did you see the idols singing ’shout to the lord’ this week on idol gives back? i thought the show was great, but even more interesting was that choice of song. first, dolly parton sings openly about jesus during her week, and now this. in case you’re not familiar with it, ’shout to the lord’ is a very, very popular christian worship song written by darlene zschech of hillsongs australia.
i found a youtube video of an edited version of the live recording from the hillsong conference in 1998 in sydney with guests ron kenoly and alvin slaughter. btw, did you know that angie and i were actually IN that recording, as part of the 1000-voice choir you can see in the background?! it’s true. anyway, the idol version from wednesday night follows under ‘read on’…

i actually saw that clip earlier this week and was quite surprised idol would choose that song too. i noticed they changed the words to "my shepherd, my saviour"... but close enough.

when they did it on Wednesday night, they changed 'Jesus' to 'shepherd'. but they opened with it on Thursday night and did it with the right words. AND i just found out that Reuben Studdard did 'shout to the lord' on his album 'i need an angel' (or something like that) which totally puts Darlene Z. on the map, but then again, i don't know anyhow who has bought a Reuben Studdard album. and here's the kicker, when you google it, the credits go to him. yikes. kind of like one time we saw someone give credit to chris tomlin for it.

when i heard they were singing this song, i thought i was hallucinating. i couldn't believe it. i was further shocked when they sung it AGAIN on Thursday. i'm still not sure why they picked that song. but i heard somewhere that jason castro is a worship leader, and last year melinda doolittle was very open about her faith. maybe they're trying to buy votes from the christian community. and angie, now you know at least one person who has bought a reuben studdard cd

I don't know if he's a worship leader, but there's certainly video of him singing at Lakepoint Church:

I, too, would have *loved* to be in on the discussions when this song came up. Who suggested it? And what were they aiming for with this? I keep waiting for the official "AI: This is why we did it" article but it hasn't come out yet.
